Response to Intervention (RTI)

To acquire an Individual Education Plan (IEP) you will need Response to Intervention (RTI) data. RTI is the process of remediating learning deficits before determining eligibility for a Specific Learning Disability in the education system. It is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. The RTI process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. I will provide an assessment in-line with the educational requirements of RTI. This will include current school data analysis, curriculum based measurement in reading, math and writing, resulting in an intervention plan that can be implemented in school and at home. Please visit the National Center for RTI for further information.

RTI integrates assessment and intervention within a multi-level prevention system to maximize student achievement and to reduce behavior problems. With RTI, schools identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor student progress, provide evidence-based interventions (and adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student’s responsiveness), and identify students with learning disabilities. Tier 1 represents the general instructional routine and core curriculum presented to all students during the 90 minute reading block. Tier 2 is supplemental instruction that student is receiving in addition to the core curriculum to help close achievement gaps identified. Tier 3 is additional time student receives to supplement Tier 1 and 2 instruction, which is individually tailored to meet the students learning needs in order to close the achievement gaps identified.

“The school said they would not consider a learning disability until they had RTI. I was not sure what that meant. Ms.. Mallia explained the process very clearly and then worked with us to establish a Response To Intervention plan that would satiate the school requirement. As a result, my daughter is now receiving Exceptional Student Education (ESE) services as a student identified with a specific learning disability (SLD).”
